Pixar's Up

So, I love Pixar movies, but they are not so hot on passing the Bechdel test. Their latest fun movie, Up, is no exception.

Ellie, the protagonist's passed away wife, is the only named female character that even talks. Kevin, being a gigantic South American bird, while female, does not. I suppose this could be a technical mo movie measure pass or bump the failure up to rule 2 instead of rule 1, but that's about it.

One kind thing the movie does is that when Ellie finds out she can't have children like she wanted, she does not curl up into a corner and die or let it cripple her life, but instead goes on to live a happy and fulfilling life, which is a good example of women having purpose in life beyond their childbearing abilities.

Yeah, it seems like some Pixar movies, while they fail it on the gender front, do at least make an effort to do it right. Like, more of an effort than a lot of mainstream Hollywood films, anyway.

Another nice thing about Up, in my opinion, is that it has an Asian character (the little boy) who doesn't have any cliched "reason" to be Asian (ie, martial arts, computer whiz, math whiz, other school whiz, Asian setting, etc), he just is Asian.
