Happy-Go-Lucky passes within the first ten minutes when the main character Poppy and her friends stay up talking after a night of dancing. However, Poppy was so obnoxious that [personal profile] foxfirefey and I could only stand to watch the first thirty minutes of the movie. Has anyone managed to sit through this movie?

I did and would like a medal for sitting through it when sober. Poppy's character was interesting, but you're right, she was really obnoxious. It was like she was using her happiness as a weapon and I couldn't decide if she was doing this on purpose or not. Did you get as far as the bit where she pulls the "Look! No hands!" joke when driving in a crowded urban street?

The women-orientated scenes drop off as the film progresses and focuses more on Poppy's driving lessons with Scott and his increasing madness. The final scene is Poppy on a boat with her female flatmate, then abandoning the conversation with her when her new boyfriend phones ("Hi, I'm on a boat."). So although the film passes the Bechdel test very quickly, it seems to fall into the trap later on of girl-scenes=fluff, guy-scenes=proper, plot-advancing drama.
